This drink contains all-natural ingredients that fight off the root causes behind over drinking, including acetaldehyde buildup, glutamine rebound, inflammation, and electrolyte imbalance. And it starts with Hovenia Dulcis.
A key ingredient included in the drink is Hovenia Dulcis, an Oriental Raisin tree. It contains Dihydromyricetin (DHM) which has anti-hepatotoxic properties to help detoxify our body after alcohol poisoning. In fact, China's first pharmacopeia, the “Tang Materia Medica”, listed Hovenia Dulcis as a sovereign remedy for drinking in year 659.
Alcohol undergoes two-step process of metabolism in our liver. First, our liver enzyme called alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) converts alcohol into an intermediate metabolite called acetaldehyde through oxidation. Acetaldehyde is an extremely toxic substance that binds to proteins, and causes cellular inflammation; resulting in effects like sweating, nausea, and vomiting. Sound familiar? Luckily, our body is equipped with more enzymes like aldehyde-dehydrogenase (ALDH) and glutathione that convert this toxic chemical into acetic acid that gets safely flushed out of our body. But when we drink too much alcohol, our enzymes can’t keep up, and acetaldehyde builds up, causing the toxic drinking after effect.
Dihydromyricetin (DHM) found inside our drink speeds up the decompose of acetaldehyde. DHM works by increasing the ability of two key enzymes to function (ADH and ALDH), which in speeds up the breakdown of alcohol into acetic acid. Consuming our beverage allows our body to flush out acetaldehyde, limiting the damage it causes and the accompanying symptoms of over drinking.
In our brain, alcohol affects two neurotransmitters: gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and Glutamate. Alcohol binds to GABA receptors, and increases GABA production, an inhibitor that causes relaxation, lowered inhibitions, slurred words and loss of motor control that are classic symptoms of drunkenness. This, in turn, suppresses the release of glutamate, an excitatory neurotransmitter that increases brain activity and energy levels. This is why alcohol has a depressive effect that make us fall asleep easily at first. But the rebound effect is why sleep quality is decreased, and we often wake up tired with anxiety.
Dihydromyricetin (DHM) found inside our drink minimizes this ‘rebound effect’ our brain experiences after consuming alcohol. DHM does this by binding to GABA receptors, and blocks the effect alcohol has on them. This is also why consuming this beverage before drinking alcohol causes us to feel less drunk and more in control.
Surrounding Hovenia Dulcis, our drink contains a proprietary blend of natural ingredients to hydrate our body, restore vital nutrients, and counter the effects of inflammation in our body after a night of drinking:
Vitamin C and B complex
C, B1, B3, B6, B9, and B12 vitamins included in our drink help reverse the depletion of protective enzymes as our body breaks down alcohol. In addition, B12 converts carbohydrates into glucose, which helps our body fight fatigue and provide energy. B3 dilates our blood vessels and increases blood flow, which allows alcohol and other toxins to be removed quicker.
Electrolytes
Electrolytes are included in our drink to keep us hydrated, and our muscular and nervous systems running full-speed.
Milk thistle
Milk thistle contains silymarin and silybin, antioxidants that are known to combat the free-radicals produced when your body breaks down alcohol.
Prickly pear extract
Prickly pear extracts help counter the effects of alcohol inflammation in the liver, mitigating headaches and nausea.
Taurine
Taurine is an amino acid that helps prevent the buildup of lipids in our liver from alcohol consumption, which in turn prevents the liver from swelling and decreasing blood flow.
H2O
Of course, water is the solvent included in our drink to help our body stay hydrated.
PS - Drugs like Xanax and Valium increase GABA production in the brain, resulting in sedation. Alcohol does the same thing by binding to GABA receptors and mimicking GABA's effect in our brain. This, by the way, is one reason we don't want to drink alcohol while taking drugs like Xanax. It can slow our heart rate and respiratory system down to dangerous levels.
