Hovenia Dulcis

Breakdown of acetaldehyde in the liver

Alcohol undergoes two-step process of metabolism in our liver. First, our liver enzyme called alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) converts alcohol into an intermediate metabolite called acetaldehyde through oxidation. Acetaldehyde is an extremely toxic substance that binds to proteins, and causes cellular inflammation; resulting in effects like sweating, nausea, and vomiting. Sound familiar? Luckily, our body is equipped with more enzymes like aldehyde-dehydrogenase (ALDH) and glutathione that convert this toxic chemical into acetic acid that gets safely flushed out of our body. But when we drink too much alcohol, our enzymes can’t keep up, and acetaldehyde builds up, causing the toxic drinking after effect.

Dihydromyricetin (DHM) found inside our drink speeds up the decompose of acetaldehyde. DHM works by increasing the ability of two key enzymes to function (ADH and ALDH), which in speeds up the breakdown of alcohol into acetic acid. Consuming our beverage allows our body to flush out acetaldehyde, limiting the damage it causes and the accompanying symptoms of over drinking.

Limiting Glutamate rebound in the brain.

In our brain, alcohol affects two neurotransmitters: gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and Glutamate. Alcohol binds to GABA receptors, and increases GABA production, an inhibitor that causes relaxation, lowered inhibitions, slurred words and loss of motor control that are classic symptoms of drunkenness. This, in turn, suppresses the release of glutamate, an excitatory neurotransmitter that increases brain activity and energy levels. DHM does this by binding to GABA receptors, and blocks the effect alcohol has on them.
